In The Community

Americans love their home communities—and rightly so!  The local community is where everything happens.  It is where we buy groceries, take our children to school, do our dry cleaning, wash our cars, go to the library and meet with friends.  Much of who we are and how we came to be begins in the community.

Attorneys know that the practice of law began, not on a grand scale, but in the community.  In times past an attorney apprenticed, applied to the bar, and hung out a shingle in the local community.  Many things changed this view—communications and travel infrastructure have globalized the marketplace—the practice of law included.  But when we reach back to re-capture the image of what being a lawyer means to ordinary people, we think of the small community.

SEAL believes that the positive professional image of lawyers and the profession of law begins in the community.  For that reason we encourage members to become involved in local bar associations, social groups, merchant associations, and the like.  We want members to share stories of how local community involvement has inspired them or others.  Tell us, and we’ll post your story for other members to see!
